once I get my stuff moved this week. I may be able to get more fish. I would like to, my family has to take care of my pets when I am out flying. Sometimes I want more fish and sometimes I don’t cause I cannot be there all the time with them. The landlord at my crashpad where I am based just set up a cichlid tank I help take care of.

does anyone know why my angel fishes ventral fins have split in to two

    Hi Chantel,
Do you have a 3 or more Angels? Being schooling fish, they are better off kept with 3+. This way they fight for rank with one another and usually leave other fish alone.

    Hello Lis,
Could be from fin nipping by tank mates.

hi eric thanks for getting back to me ,
the tank is a breeding tank full of agnels only and there is about 3/4 with this problem, its not so much split but looks like from halfway down they have growen another ( bizzarr i know ) someone suggested it may be that they have been bread within familey brother with sister, i bought them as youngsters i dont know if this has happened ?
thanks for your input though nice to know someone out there in cyberspace cares 🙂

I’d like to add a recent experience to Eric’s advice of keeping angels in 3’s. Watch out for any sign of two pairing off. I had that happen with two of my three, and before I knew it, they’d beaten the third almost to death.

Thanks for sharing Hevach. This can happen. as they all have their own personalities. It’s less likely the higher the numbers. 3 less likely than 2 and so on. Given their natural schooling tendencies as a general rule, the more of the same fish, the merrier.

I think it’s great for everyone to hear your story. It shows the importance of keeping a close eye on things anytime you introduce new fish to your tank. Sounds like you stepped in right in time. I hope your third Angel made out alright.

Hi, the last time I went to the pet store to buy fish, I was looking at the angelfish and noticed that the sign on their tank said they were mildly aggressive. Is that true? Would they be ok in my tank or would they harass my other fish?

  13. Eric June 23, 2008 at 6:08 am #

    Hi Leslie,
Yes, Angelfish can be mildly aggressive. Keeping 3 or more (preferably 5) and keeping tank mates that are the same size or bigger than you angels should keep you out of trouble.

I got lucky and bought 2 angels 2 years ago and happened to buy a male and female. They ended up breeding and laid eggs many times, once letting them live and caring for them. It was cool to watch that. Other times the female would eat the whole batch of eggs overnight. They definitely have awesome personalities and are very aggressive (even towards me) when laying eggs. My male just recently died and the female has swimbladder disease and is hanging on daily, just can’t swim like she used to. I will definitely get more angels in the future as I raised those two from babies. They grow fast. See ya.
